Why We Chose Infidien (2006)

Setting out to buy a yacht for a circumnavigation, our search priorities were fairly straightforward: safety, comfort, speed and ease of maintenance (in that order of importance). When ''Infidien'' became available, we saw a rare opportunity to own an expedition class yacht built to the standards of the finest European and North American custom yards at a very competitive price. Designer Angelo Lavranos (who designed the Dashews' "Intermezzo II") refers to her as his “4 x 4” design, the perfect “go anywhere” yacht.

See Lavranos Marine Design feature for more information.

She was designed as a world girdling cruiser, for Mr Van Zuylen, a very experienced owner in 1987, who single-handed her from South Africa to Grenada, West Indies (her former name was ''Southern Terrier'').

The collaboration between designer and the original owner , is well visible in every detail on her.

Overall she is a well tested vessel, being a loved live aboard yacht for the second owners Rick, Patti & Jessie Miller, on their 5 year circumnavigation (2001-2006).

Safety

Infidien is constructed of 5083 marine grade aluminum alloy in excess of Lloyds standards for high latitude sailing with 12mm plate at the bow and forward centreline; The hull is semi-faired welded plate over frame and stringer framing (as opposed to popular European production metal yachts which opt for economical hard chine frame less construction) giving her exceptional hull rigidity and collision protection. The rig and components are "over-spec" for durability in challenging conditions. The beefy doghouse and overhead arch provide protection from spray, wind, and sun for security on even the roughest passages. All deck hatches are equipped with removable security bars which allow ventilation and prevent intruders.

Comfort

The Lavranos 13m design is stiff, rarely heeling past 14 degrees, and provides a sea kindly motion at all points of sail. Articulating bowsprit and asymmetric spinnaker provide exceptional reaching and downwind performance and comfort. The open galley/saloon floor plan gives a spacious atmosphere without sacrificing storage space. The long aft cockpit and beefy hard dodger provide comfort on rough passages and a convivial meeting place for sundowners. Full hull and deck sprayed foam insulation keeps the interior cool, dry and quiet. She has excellent light and ventilation throughout.

Speed

Her passage making ability speaks for itself. She was sailed single handed from Cape town, South Africa to Grenada, West Indies (5500 miles) in 39 days by Nick Van Zuylen, her original owner. ''Her longest passage was 3700 miles going from the Galapagos to the Marquesas in 17 days, averaging 7.25 knots'' said Rick Miller, her second owner. We have sailed her across the Atlantic and Med sea, reading in many occasions double digits on her speedometer.

Ease of Maintenance

I cannot overemphasize the low maintenance advantages of an unpainted aluminium superstructure. Aside from the obvious lack of osmosis and wood rot, a properly grounded and isolated electrical system insure an exceptionally long and trouble free structural lifespan - for good reason aluminium is the material of choice for modern super yacht construction. Teak decking is confined to the cockpit and the only exterior varnish is two part polyurethane on the cockpit table and flag staff! The engine is centrally positioned with 3-sided accessibility.

Exceptional value

A Rick's friend was quoted a price of $460,000 USD for a new boat of this hull design from Jacob Brothers. That price did not include the tens of thousands of dollars of equipment needed to actually go cruising (dinghy and outboard motor, life raft, radios, windlass, auto pilot and wind vane self-steering, GPS, wind instruments, spinnaker, radar, awnings, spare parts, BBQ, fenders, epirb, mooring lines, etc., etc., etc.). We also think Infidien compares very favourably in terms of craftsmanship and value with popular metal production boats, such as the Ovni; and we prefer the durability, stability and sailing characteristics of the fixed keel.

Solid cherry joinery

Hard to find in a boat in this price range.

6'5 headroom and extra-long double bed - Great for you tall guys!

Highest quality components and hardware

Lister Petter 55 hp turbo engine, Andersen winches, Goiot ports and hatches, Lofrans 1500 watt windlass, Max Prop, PYI drip less shaft seal, Aqua Drive coupling...

Designed and outfitted for long-range, international cruising

Infidien has high capacity water and fuel tankage, extensive storage lockers, international power systems, self-steering mechanism, solar and wind power systems, short-handed sailing setup, asymmetrical spinnaker, communication systems, and navigational instrumentation which allow long trips to remote anchorages.

Ready-to-go condition

We have seen many people take more time preparing to go cruising than actually cruising or worse, taking too long preparing and never actually going. Rick Miller spent about a month customizing Infidien after purchasing her before they left for their circumnavigation and we done the same, replacing her standing rigging, before our Atlantic-Med crossing, keeping her in a ready to go condition.

Infidien is well outfitted and has been well maintained. She is ready for any ocean passage or a world cruise.

Finally

A personal note of thanks to Angelo Lavranos, Nick Van Zuylen and the folks at Jacobs Bros. for the thoughtful attention to detail and decades of boat building experience that can make the difference between prematurely shipping your boat home from New Zealand and the satisfaction of a pleasant and successfully completed voyage. We want to thank Rick, Patti & Jessie Miller for the good energy and all the care that they have put on her. Also we want to thank Mike from s/y GILANA and Tony from 'The Little Ship Company'.

SPECIAL THANKS TO RICK MILLER FOR THE GREAT HELP, THE GOOD ENERGY AND THE CARE GIVEN TO INFIDIEN.

WE FEEL THAT TONY BREWER FROM ''THE LITTLE SHIP COMPANY'' GAVE US THE BEST OF HIS HELP.

ALSO WE WANT TO THANK MIKE FROM S/Y GILIANA FOR BEING SO HELPFUL.

WE WANT TO MENTION THE HELP WE GOT FROM HELLAS MARINE, AND ALL THE FRIENDS THAT FOLLOWED US TO THE SEAS, MENTALLY.

AFTER A TWO MONTHS ATLANTIC AND MED CROSSING (VIA AZORES, GIBRALTAR, MAJORCA SPAIN, REZZIO ITALY), INFIDIEN IS NOW LYING IN KALAMAKI MARINA, ATHENS GREECE.
